Dubai's gold trade began in the 1940s when merchants in Deira Creek started trading with India and East Africa. By the 1960s it had become the largest gold re-export hub in the world — a position it still holds.
The reason is structural: the UAE charges zero import duty on gold bullion. Combined with its position at the crossroads of three continents, Dubai attracts gold from Swiss refineries, African mines, and Australian producers — all competing in the same market. Gold trades at or near global spot price, with none of the middleman markups built into US or European supply chains.
